'Left Coast' putting traditional marriage at
risk
by James L.
Lambert
The institution of
marriage has long been considered the bedrock of societies, cultures, and
religions throughout history. Traditionally defined as between one man and
one woman, marriage is known as the foundation of families throughout the
world. But today, the traditional definition of marriage is under attack in
the State of California.
Earlier this year, four
California State Supreme Court justices "created" a new definition of
marriage. That court's decision on May 15 overturned the will of 4.5 million
California citizens (61 percent of the total vote) who had expressed their
preference by approving Proposition 22 in March 2000.
Pro-family
advocates will now try to reverse the high court's decision...again, the
democratic way: by popular vote. If approved, Proposition 8 -- a voter
initiative that defines marriage as between one man and one woman -- will be
woven into the California state constitution. It was placed on the ballot
after more than 1.2 million voters signed petitions.
Again, opposition to Prop. 8 is coming from the usual sources. Democratic
presidential candidate Barack Obama has said he opposes it. The California
Democratic Party opposes it. McDonald's, AT&T, and Pacific Gas & Electric
have all donated to groups that actively oppose Proposition 8 and traditional
marriage. Gay and lesbian advocacy groups have alleged it is "hateful" to
support traditional marriage.
Already, advertising in support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT)
position has appeared on local television, defending homosexuals' "right" to
marry. Democrat State Attorney General Jerry Brown has also weighed in on the
battle by changing the ballot wording of the proposition so it is sympathetic
to gay marriage advocates.
Groups like ProtectMarrige.com, SaveCalifornia.org, NOMcalifornia.org
(National Organization for Marriage), and others are staging efforts to
canvas neighborhoods and solicit voters in many ways, to promote passage of
Prop. 8. In addition, I plan on going to various city council meetings
throughout Southern California in the next 60 days to ask council members to
publicly endorse Prop. 8.
Your response and your efforts are crucial. Please email or call the council
members from Escondido, Encinitas, Oceanside, Vista, Lakeside, Lemon Grove,
Chula Vista, La Mesa, Santee, National City, Coronado, San Clemente, Irvine,
Santa Ana, Newport, Laguna Beach, Santa Ana, Huntington Beach, and Los
Angeles (California) -- and ask them to support Proposition 8.
Legal experts have already predicted that the result of this vote will have a
far-reaching effect on marriage as we know it throughout the U.S. It doesn't
matter what state you reside in -- if you believe that marriage (as defined
by Jesus himself) is between one man and one woman, then please support us
here in California. This vote will affect all of America.
In whatever way or in whatever capacity, we need help now. Time is short.
